The trading day opens in full risk-off. The Nikkei 225 tumbled 8.46% to 57,358, the Nasdaq 100 fell 6.51% to 26,556, and crypto was sold wholesale, with Bitcoin back under $76,000 β€” leaving oil and precious metals as the session’s only steady bid.

Crypto under heavy pressure

UNIUSD led every instrument lower, down 10.65% to 6.814. Stellar fell 8.17%, Ethereum 7.94% to 2,229.59 and Cardano 7.31%. Litecoin lost 7.25%, Dogecoin 6.64% and XRP 6.15% to 1.2232. Bitcoin dropped 5.67% to 75,862 and Solana 5.82% to 89.90, with BNB (-4.21% to 688.93) and Polkadot (-3.15%) falling less. Ethereum’s one-week change is barely negative at 0.49%, underscoring how concentrated the selling was in a single session. The monthly and yearly figures carry the deeper damage: Cardano is down 28.34% on the month and 65.62% on the year, with XRP 44.69% lower over twelve months.

Majors tilt defensive

In currencies the majors held together better than the risk assets, but the tilt was clear. The Australian dollar was the weak major β€” AUD/USD fell 1.10% to 0.69255 and AUD/JPY dropped 1.52% β€” while EUR/AUD rose 0.95% to 1.61909, one of the day’s larger FX moves. The yen and franc firmed, with USD/JPY easing 0.39% to 157.72 and CHF/JPY holding 193.00. EUR/USD slipped 0.18% to 1.12141 and GBP/USD 0.22% to 1.34454, both little changed on the week though the euro still sits 2.89% below a year ago. USD/MXN rose 0.82%, USD/SEK 0.80% and USD/ZAR 0.53%, marking the dollar’s firmer corners.

Equities sink, commodities diverge

The equity rout ran from Tokyo to New York. The S&P 500 fell 4.55% to 7,345 and the Dow 3.85%, extending the Nasdaq’s 14.85% monthly decline. Europe took less: the DAX lost 1.82%, the Euro Stoxx 50 1.92% and the FTSE 100 1.96%, while Spain’s IBEX 35 held almost flat at -0.34% and remains 20.21% higher on the year. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was the lone green index, up 0.16% and still 4.89% higher on the week. Even after today’s drop the Nikkei is up 14.50% over twelve months. Crude rebounded β€” UKOil climbed 3.95% to 97.69 and USOil 2.92% to 90.24, though both remain down more than 11% on the week. Gold added 0.60% to 4,090 and is up 5.53% over seven days; platinum gained 1.31% and palladium 2.35%, with only silver (-0.88% to 51.80) softer among the metals.

The Nikkei and the chip-heavy Nasdaq remain the session’s weakest spots, and oil’s bounce stands against a double-digit weekly loss.
