Crude oil dominated the US close, with Brent (UKOil) down 6.57% to $103.44 and WTI (USOil) off 6.01% to $95.25 β€” the day’s two heaviest fallers by a wide margin, and the only instruments to move more than 4%.

Energy

Both benchmarks surrendered more than a week’s gains in a single session: UKOil is now 5.64% lower on the week and USOil down 4.23%. The longer picture stays firmer β€” crude is still up 2.33% and 6.05% on the month respectively, and both sit roughly 57% to 60% higher over the past year.

Equities

Wall Street’s weakness was concentrated in technology. The Nasdaq 100 fell 1.58% to 28,075.94, extending a 5.45% weekly and 9.12% monthly slide, though it clings to an 8.24% gain on the year. The S&P 500 shed 0.76% to 7,553.08 while the Dow Jones eked out a 0.1% rise to 52,016.39.

Europe moved the other way. Spain’s IBEX 35 was the single biggest gainer in the dataset, up 2.0% to 18,934.62, with the CAC 40 adding 1.02% and the DAX 40 up 0.21%. The FTSE 100 rose 0.23% to 10,770.81, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 added 0.3% on the day despite sitting 9.88% lower on the month.

Metals

Precious metals firmed against a softer dollar. Silver rose 1.57% to $50.53 and gold added 1.21% to $3,945.63 β€” two of the day’s top gainers β€” yet both are still lower on the week, by 7.21% and 2.88%. Over the year silver holds a 5.44% gain while gold is marginally lower, off 1.28%. The rest of the complex lagged: palladium fell 2.44% to $967.99, and platinum was little changed at $1,444.90, down 6.46% over the past week.

Currencies

The oil-sensitive Norwegian krone was the weakest major. EUR/NOK climbed 1.27% to 10.4066, GBP/NOK 1.13% to 12.4675 and USD/NOK 0.93% to 9.3001. Elsewhere the dollar was mixed: EUR/USD edged up 0.3% to 1.1188 and GBP/USD 0.17% to 1.3405, but USD/CHF fell 0.78% to 0.8181 and USD/MXN 1.2% to 18.566. CHF/JPY was the standout cross, up 0.95% to 192.99.

Crypto

Crypto stayed broadly offered. Bitcoin slipped 1.96% to $76,701 and Ethereum 1.02% to $2,248.56, while Litecoin (-3.3%), Solana (-3.0%), Bitcoin Cash (-2.7%) and GRT (-4.0%) led the declines; XRP was the rare holdout at -0.1%. BNB and Dogecoin each fell about 2%. The monthly damage runs deep β€” Cardano is off 27.57%, Stellar 27.07% and Solana 24.67% over 30 days.

The chip-heavy Nasdaq remains the session’s clear soft spot, down more than 9% on the month even as European benchmarks pushed higher.
