Canada’s Employment Change report headlines the North American session, landing at 12:30 UTC on Friday. As a top-tier labour-market gauge released in a single print, it tends to concentrate attention squarely on the Canadian dollar.

What the Employment Change report measures

The Employment Change figure estimates the net number of jobs added or lost across the Canadian economy over the past month. Because hiring reflects business confidence and feeds through to consumer spending, markets treat it as a timely read on growth momentum and a key input for Bank of Canada rate expectations.

The forecast points to a modest gain of 6.1K jobs, a swing back toward expansion after the previous month recorded a steep loss of 41.7K. That contrast between a positive projection and a sharply negative prior print is what places this report on the watchlist, since it frames how quickly the labour market is steadying.

How the Canadian dollar pairs are trading

Heading into the data, the Canadian dollar is broadly firmer across the crosses on our feed. AUD/CAD is the biggest mover, down 0.35% at 0.98876, with USD/CAD easing 0.22% to 1.42265.

GBP/CAD is lower by 0.18% at 1.8801 and NZD/CAD matches that pace, off 0.18% at 0.79679. EUR/CAD has slipped 0.11% to 1.59477, while CAD/CHF is the exception, down 0.10% at 0.58366, where the Canadian dollar sits on the softer side.

The figure is watched as a gauge of how quickly Canadian hiring is stabilising after the prior month’s contraction.
