Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda is scheduled to speak at 06:35 UTC on 6 October, and the appearance headlines the Asian session for yen watchers. With no data release attached, attention falls on the tone and wording of his remarks.
What a BOJ Ueda speech means for the yen
As head of the Bank of Japan, Ueda sits at the centre of one of the few major central banks to have kept policy unusually accommodative in recent years, which is why any public appearance carries a high-impact tag. Markets comb his language for signals on interest rates, government bond purchases and the BOJ’s read on inflation and wage growth.
The BOJ’s policy path is a key driver of the yen against the dollar and other majors, so traders treat even informal comments as potential catalysts. Because this is a speech rather than a scheduled statistic, there is no forecast or previous figure to compare, and unscripted question-and-answer sessions can move the yen as much as the prepared text.
How the JPY pairs are trading
Ahead of the event, the yen crosses on our feed are mostly softer. SGD/JPY leads the move, down 0.28% at 123.10, followed by NZD/JPY off 0.18% at 88.44 and AUD/JPY down 0.14% at 109.61.
On the firmer side, EUR/JPY is up 0.11% at 177.75 and CHF/JPY is marginally higher at 190.47, while CAD/JPY sits just below flat, down 0.06% at 110.67.
A BOJ governor’s speech is watched for any shift in the central bank’s tone on rates, bond buying and the inflation outlook.
