The Japanese yen is the through-line this morning, firming against every major it trades against. USDJPY fell 1.20% to 154.33, capping a 3.66% weekly slide, and the crosses moved in lockstep.
Currencies
EURJPY dropped 1.12% to 179.35, GBPJPY lost 1.03% to 208.94, and CHFJPY fell 1.14% to 190.64. NZDJPY was the heaviest of the set, off 1.35% to 90.63 and down 3.99% on the week.
Away from the yen, the majors were quiet. EURUSD sat at 1.16179, up 0.07%, and GBPUSD held 1.35317. AUDUSD edged up 0.14% to 0.72151, extending a 9.38% year-on-year gain.
The dollar softened against the commodity currencies. USDNOK fell 0.45% to 9.25706 and USDZAR dropped 0.27% to 15.909, the rand now down 8.91% over the year. USDCAD eased 0.15% to 1.38142.
Crypto
Crypto split hard between the majors and the tail. Polkadot topped the board with an 8.91% jump to 1.063, and is up 33.54% on the month despite sitting 73.70% lower on the year. Stellar added 2.88% and Litecoin 1.22%.
The large caps drifted the other way. Bitcoin fell 1.39% to 79,203.82, holding a 22.15% monthly gain, while Ethereum slipped 0.85% to 2,492.46. XRP lost 1.77% to 1.3975 and BNB dropped 1.79% to 738.50.
Solana was among the day’s weakest, down 2.39% to 103.93 though still 36.48% higher on the month. The steepest fall came from UNI, off 5.97% to 6.8565, and LNK, down 3.56% β both after outsized monthly runs of 72% and 56% respectively.
Metals and energy
The platinum group led the metals. Platinum rose 1.16% to 1,832.16 and palladium added 0.74% to 1,401.57, up 7.46% on the week. Silver was flat at 66.16 but holds a 60.13% year-on-year gain, while gold slipped 0.39% to 4,406.26.
Crude firmed on both grades. USOil rose 0.62% to 90.65 and UKOil 0.63% to 95.39, each up roughly 15% on the month and around 45% on the year.
Indices
Stock indices leaned lower. The Hang Seng was the standout drag, down 1.48% to 25,294.76. Europe was mixed β the DAX eased 0.22% to 25,995.20 while the CAC ticked up 0.15%. In the US, the Dow fell 0.38% and the S&P 500 slipped 0.14%, though the Nasdaq 100 rose 0.16% to 29,573.16.
The yen crosses remain the session’s clearest mover heading into the European open.
