BOE Governor Bailey’s remarks landed at 08:50 UTC on 4 September 2026, and the pound’s response was subdued across the board. The largest move was in GBP/USD, which eased 0.07% in the 40 minutes that followed.

Where the pound moved

GBP/USD was the standout, slipping from 1.35327 to 1.35231, a 0.07% decline.

GBP/AUD softened next, easing 0.05% from 1.87940 to 1.87846.

On the other side, GBP/SEK firmed 0.04% from 12.91508 to 12.91977, and GBP/CHF nudged up 0.02% from 1.09445 to 1.09469.

The remaining crosses barely moved. GBP/NZD ticked up 0.02% to 2.30104, while GBP/JPY was virtually flat, up just 0.005% at 211.687.

What the reaction shows

The reaction was muted. No pair moved more than roughly a tenth of a percent, and the direction was mixed rather than uniform.

Sterling leaned slightly softer against the dollar and Aussie, but firmed marginally against the krona and franc, leaving no clear single-direction trend in the pound.

With the moves this contained, the speech did not spark a decisive shift in any GBP cross over the window measured.
