Hard assets carried the session while stocks retreated. Platinum surged 4.27% to $1,903.38, crude pushed higher, and every equity index on the board closed red.

Metals and energy

Platinum was the standout, up 4.27% on the day and 8.86% over the month. Silver added 2.51% to $67.22, extending a 63.19% gain over the year. Gold climbed 1.15% to $4,399.75, though it remains down 1.79% on the week.

Crude did the rest of the lifting. USOil rose 2.1% to $94.27 and UKOil gained 2.02% to $99.32. Both are up more than 13% on the month and roughly 48% over the year.

Equities

The selling was broad. Europe took the hardest hit, with the CAC 40 off 1.38% to 8,149.87, the DAX 40 and IBEX 35 each down 1.29%, and the Euro Stoxx 50 lower by 1.22%. The CAC has now shed 6.41% over the month.

Asia followed: the Hang Seng fell 1.25% and the Nikkei 225 slipped 0.94% to 64,334.88, still up 46.44% on the year. In the US the losses were shallower β€” the Dow dropped 0.61%, the S&P 500 eased 0.37%, and the Nasdaq 100 held best with a 0.16% dip.

Crypto

The altcoins bore the brunt. Polkadot cratered 10.54% to $1.112, unwinding part of a 25.51% weekly run. UNIUSD fell 8.77% and LNKUSD lost 5.92%. Dogecoin dropped 3.45% and Stellar fell 2.92%.

Majors held up better. Bitcoin slipped just 0.26% to $78,225.97 and Ethereum eased 0.6% to $2,469.06, both still comfortably higher on the month at 23.13% and 31.3%. XTZUSD bucked the trend entirely, jumping 6.22% to top the day’s gainers.

Currencies

The dollar was mixed and mostly quiet. USDNOK fell 0.49% to 9.17048 as the krone tracked firmer oil, and USDZAR dropped 0.33% to 15.945. The yen was soft, with USDJPY up 0.1% to 153.59 and EURJPY adding 0.14%. NZDUSD was the weakest major, off 0.45% to 0.58317.

The risk-off tone across equities sat alongside firm bids in metals and crude β€” the split between hard assets and stocks was the session’s clearest divide.
