Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey is scheduled to speak at 09:15 UTC, and with no data release attached, his remarks are the sterling session’s main event. A speech carries no forecast or prior figure, so the market reads tone rather than a number.

What the Bailey speech means for the pound

A BoE Governor’s public appearance is watched because Bailey can touch on the outlook for inflation, growth and the policy rate, and any shift in emphasis tends to ripple straight through GBP crosses. Unlike a scheduled data point, a speech has no consensus estimate to beat; traders instead parse phrasing, Q&A answers and how closely the language tracks the bank’s most recent guidance.

Because the event is unscripted, liquidity in sterling pairs can thin around the headline, and price swings often cluster in the minutes after the first comments hit the wires.

How the GBP pairs are trading

Sterling is softer across most of the board heading into the remarks, with the Scandinavian crosses leading the move. GBPSEK is down 0.5% at 13.06055 and GBPNOK is off 0.41% at 12.49815, the day’s biggest declines. GBPSGD is lower by 0.33% at 1.68882, while GBPUSD has eased 0.19% to 1.32119.

The picture is mixed elsewhere: GBPJPY is up 0.16% at 209.83, and EURGBP has firmed 0.09% to 0.8603, leaving the euro marginally higher against the pound.

Markets watch a Bailey appearance for any change in tone on the BoE’s rate and inflation stance.
