The UK Claimant Count Change landed at 06:00 UTC on 18 August 2026, and sterling drifted lower across the board in the following half hour. The biggest move came in GBPNOK, which slipped 0.09%.

Where the GBP moved

GBPNOK led the decline, easing to 12.7404 from 12.7514, a move of -0.09%.

GBPSEK followed closely, softening to 12.8801 from 12.8896, down 0.07%.

GBPCHF edged to 1.09817 from 1.09862 (-0.04%), while GBPSGD slipped to 1.72918 from 1.72984 (-0.04%).

Further down, GBPAUD ticked to 1.90577 from 1.90633 (-0.03%), and GBPNZD was essentially flat at 2.30195 from 2.30206 (-0.005%).

What the reaction shows

The reaction was uniformly soft but muted, with sterling losing a little ground against every counterpart on the list. No pair moved more than a tenth of a percent, so the overall response was contained rather than dramatic.

The modest selling concentrated in the Scandinavian crosses, where GBPNOK and GBPSEK showed the clearest give. Against the Swiss franc, Singapore dollar and the Antipodean currencies, moves were smaller still, and GBPNZD barely registered a change.

Taken together, the picture is one of a broad but shallow drift lower in the pound within 30 minutes of the release, with no single cross standing out sharply from the rest.
