BOE Governor Bailey spoke at 12:00 UTC on 30 July 2026, and sterling took divergent paths across the board. The standout was GBP/JPY, which slid nearly 1.8% in the 150 minutes that followed.

Where the pound moved

GBP/JPY led the reaction by a wide margin, falling from 218.08 to 214.17, a drop of 1.79%. That move dominated the sterling complex and set it apart from every other pair on our feed.

Against the dollar, the pound firmed. GBP/USD rose from 1.33882 to 1.34318, a gain of 0.33%. GBP/NOK added 0.22%, edging up from 12.808 to 12.836.

The remaining crosses were softer but contained. GBP/AUD eased 0.13% from 1.91733 to 1.91479, GBP/NZD slipped 0.10% from 2.29111 to 2.28878, and GBP/SGD barely budged, down 0.04% to 1.72333.

What the reaction shows

The reaction was concentrated almost entirely in GBP/JPY, where the near-1.8% slide dwarfed everything else. Much of that magnitude reflects the yen leg rather than a uniform sterling story.

Elsewhere the picture was mixed and modest. The pound gained against the dollar and the krone but lost a little ground versus the Australian and New Zealand dollars, while the Singapore dollar cross was essentially flat.

Outside the yen pair, the moves stayed small, pointing to a measured response across most sterling crosses following the remarks.
