Energy stole the session. US crude jumped 4.8% to $91.31 and Brent added 4.59% to $94.33, extending a run that now reads +28.27% and +26.67% on the month respectively.
The move stood in sharp contrast to weakness almost everywhere else. Equities, metals and crypto all finished in the red.
Commodities and Metals
Both crude benchmarks are the standout gainers on the board, with USOil up nearly 48% over the past year. The week-to-date gains β 11.64% for WTI, 8.79% for Brent β underline how quickly the barrel has repriced.
Metals moved the other way. Gold slipped 2.04% to $4,048.88, and silver dropped 3.48% to $57.63, though silver still holds a 3.08% weekly gain. Platinum fell 2.67% and palladium lost 3.02%.
Equities
The selling was broad. The Nasdaq 100 shed 1.42% to 28,564.14, the S&P 500 fell 1.02% and the Dow lost 0.99%.
Europe was heavier still. The IBEX 35 dropped 1.79%, the Euro Stoxx 50 fell 1.66% and the CAC 40 lost 1.65%. The DAX closed down 1.38%. Asia’s Nikkei 225 fell 1.77%, leaving it down 7.29% on the month despite a 45% yearly gain.
Currencies
The dollar firmed against most peers. USDZAR rose 2.0% to 16.718, the day’s largest FX move, while USDSEK gained 0.56% and USDJPY added 0.45% to 163.82. EURUSD eased 0.32% to 1.13747 and GBPUSD fell 0.44% to 1.33146.
Crypto
Digital assets sold off in unison. Dogecoin led the decline at -4.81%, followed by GRT -4.27% and MATIC -4.2%. Bitcoin Cash lost 3.88%, Bitcoin slipped 1.55% to $65,051.69 and Ethereum fell 2.64%. Tezos bucked the trend, up 2.58%.
With energy climbing while risk assets and metals pull back, the crude complex remains the session’s clear outlier.
