About Palladium

About Palladium

Palladium is the most industrially focused of all precious metals, with approximately 80% of its demand coming from catalytic converters in gasoline-powered vehicles. Discovered in 1803 and named after the asteroid Pallas, this silvery-white metal is one of the rarest elements on Earth, roughly 15 times rarer than platinum and 30 times rarer than gold. Palladium belongs to the platinum group metals (PGMs) and shares many of platinum’s catalytic properties, but it is particularly effective at converting harmful gasoline engine emissions into less toxic substances. The metal experienced one of the most dramatic price rallies in commodity history, surging from under $500 per ounce in 2016 to over $3,000 in 2022, driven by persistent supply deficits and growing automotive demand. Palladium is traded on the NYMEX and LPPM, priced in US dollars per troy ounce.

What Drives Palladium Prices?

Global Gasoline Vehicle Production

As the primary metal used in gasoline vehicle catalytic converters, palladium demand is directly tied to global auto production volumes. China, the United States, Europe, and Japan are the largest auto markets, and production figures from these regions drive demand forecasts. Tightening emission standards in China and other developing nations increase the palladium loading per vehicle, partially offsetting any decline in overall vehicle production.

Russian Supply Risk

Russia, primarily through the mining giant Norilsk Nickel, supplies approximately 40% of global palladium. This extreme supply concentration makes palladium prices highly sensitive to Russian geopolitical risks, sanctions, export restrictions, and operational disruptions. Any escalation in tensions affecting Russian exports can cause sharp price spikes due to the difficulty of quickly sourcing alternative supply.

Electric Vehicle Transition

The accelerating shift toward electric vehicles represents a structural long-term demand headwind for palladium, as battery EVs do not use catalytic converters. However, the transition is gradual, and hybrid vehicles (which still require catalytic converters) may sustain palladium demand longer than pure EV adoption rates suggest. The pace and trajectory of global EV adoption is a critical factor in palladium’s long-term pricing.

Substitution with Platinum

When palladium prices rise significantly above platinum, automakers begin the engineering process of substituting platinum in gasoline vehicle catalytic converters. This substitution cycle takes 2-3 years to implement at scale and creates a natural ceiling on palladium prices relative to platinum. The palladium-to-platinum ratio is closely watched as an indicator of substitution pressure.

Trading Palladium

Palladium trades on the NYMEX (contract size: 100 troy ounces) and through CFDs and spot markets. The metal is the most volatile of the precious metals, with daily ranges frequently exceeding 3-5%. Liquidity is lower than gold, silver, or platinum, resulting in wider spreads and potential slippage during fast-moving markets. Palladium is most liquid during the London-New York overlap but can experience sharp moves on Russian geopolitical headlines at any time. Due to its extreme volatility and lower liquidity, palladium is best suited for experienced commodity traders with appropriate risk management frameworks.

Palladium FAQ

What is palladium?
Palladium is the most industrial of the precious metals, primarily used in gasoline engine catalytic converters. Russia and South Africa produce about 80% of global supply.
What moves palladium prices?
Auto industry demand, Russian supply risk, EV adoption rates (reducing catalytic converter demand), recycling supply, and speculative flows are the key drivers.
Why has palladium declined?
The shift toward electric vehicles reduces future catalytic converter demand, while increased recycling and substitution with cheaper platinum have pressured prices lower.
