About NASDAQ Composite
About the NASDAQ Composite
The NASDAQ Composite is a stock market index that includes over 3,000 companies listed on the NASDAQ exchange, making it one of the broadest US indices by number of constituents. However, its character is defined by its massive technology sector weighting, which exceeds 50% of the index. This tech concentration makes the NASDAQ the world’s premier benchmark for technology, innovation, and growth-oriented companies. The NASDAQ exchange, founded in 1971 as the world’s first electronic stock market, has attracted the listing of most major tech companies, including Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, NVIDIA, Alphabet, Meta, and Tesla. The related NASDAQ 100 (NDX) tracks the 100 largest non-financial NASDAQ-listed stocks and is the more commonly traded instrument via futures (NQ) and the hugely popular QQQ ETF.
What Moves the NASDAQ?
Mega-Cap Tech Earnings
The earnings reports of the largest NASDAQ-listed companies are the single most powerful catalyst for index movement. Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, NVIDIA, Alphabet, Meta, and Tesla collectively represent an enormous share of the index’s market capitalization. A single mega-cap earnings beat or miss can move the entire index by 1-2% or more. Revenue growth rates, margins, user metrics, and forward guidance from these companies set the tone for the broader tech sector.
Interest Rate Sensitivity
Growth and technology stocks are particularly sensitive to interest rate expectations because their valuations depend heavily on discounting future earnings. Higher interest rates increase discount rates, compressing the present value of companies whose earnings are expected years in the future. When the Federal Reserve signals higher-for-longer rates, the NASDAQ typically underperforms. When rates are expected to fall, the NASDAQ tends to lead the market higher. The NASDAQ often moves inversely with Treasury yields on a day-to-day basis.
AI, Innovation, and Technology Trends
Developments in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, semiconductor technology, autonomous vehicles, and other emerging technologies drive sentiment across NASDAQ-listed companies. AI investment cycles have become a particularly dominant narrative, with companies demonstrating AI capabilities or revenue receiving premium valuations. Product launches, regulatory developments affecting tech companies, and shifts in consumer technology adoption patterns all influence the index.
Risk Appetite and Growth vs Value Rotation
The NASDAQ is a barometer of investor appetite for growth versus value. During risk-on periods when investors chase growth, the NASDAQ outperforms traditional indices. During risk-off or “value rotation” periods, capital flows out of tech and into defensive, dividend-paying sectors, causing the NASDAQ to underperform the Dow or S&P 500. The NASDAQ-to-Dow ratio is a useful gauge of growth-versus-value sentiment.
Trading the NASDAQ
The NASDAQ 100 is traded through E-mini futures (NQ), Micro E-mini futures (MNQ), the QQQ ETF, options, and CFDs. Regular trading hours are 09:30-16:00 ET with nearly 24-hour futures access. The NASDAQ 100 is one of the most volatile major indices, with daily ranges of 1-3% being common and 5%+ swings possible during earnings season or macro events. Extended hours trading around tech earnings releases (typically reported after the 16:00 ET close) can produce significant moves in futures and ETFs. The NASDAQ is favored by active traders who thrive on volatility and have conviction in technology sector themes.
