About CAC 40
About the CAC 40
The CAC 40 (Cotation Assistee en Continu) is the benchmark stock market index for France, tracking the 40 most significant stocks listed on Euronext Paris by market capitalization and trading volume. Launched in 1987 with a base level of 1,000, the CAC 40 represents the pride of French corporate power and is unique among major global indices for its extraordinary luxury goods weighting. France is home to the world’s largest luxury conglomerates, and this sector gives the CAC 40 a distinctive character tied to global wealth, aspirational consumer spending, and Chinese tourist flows. The index also features major energy, defense, financial, and industrial companies, providing exposure to some of Europe’s most internationally competitive businesses. France is the Eurozone’s second-largest economy, making the CAC 40 an important indicator of European economic health alongside the German DAX.
What Moves the CAC 40?
Luxury Sector and Chinese Demand
LVMH, the world’s largest luxury group, alone represents approximately 12% of the CAC 40, with Hermes, Kering, and L’Oreal adding further luxury exposure. Global luxury demand is driven disproportionately by Chinese consumers, both domestically and through international travel. Chinese economic health, tourism trends, consumer confidence, and government policies affecting luxury consumption are therefore outsized drivers of the CAC 40. A strong Chinese reopening or stimulus package can lift the CAC 40 even when broader European sentiment is neutral.
ECB Monetary Policy
As a Eurozone index, the CAC 40 is directly impacted by European Central Bank interest rate decisions, quantitative policy, and forward guidance. Lower rates support equity valuations and reduce borrowing costs for French corporations. ECB press conferences and staff economic projections can produce significant intraday CAC 40 moves. French government bond spreads relative to German Bunds are also watched as an indicator of French sovereign risk affecting the index.
Energy and Defense Sectors
TotalEnergies, one of the world’s largest integrated oil and gas companies, provides direct crude oil price exposure within the index. Defense companies like Thales and Safran have gained importance amid increased European defense spending. These sectors can drive CAC 40 performance independent of the luxury cycle, particularly during periods of energy price volatility or geopolitical tension.
French and European Politics
French presidential and legislative elections, pension reform protests, fiscal policy debates, and broader EU governance issues can create CAC 40 volatility. France’s political system, where presidential power is significant, means leadership changes or policy pivots can have immediate market implications. The spread between French and German bond yields often widens during French political uncertainty, reflecting risk premiums that affect equity valuations.
Trading the CAC 40
The CAC 40 is traded through futures on Euronext, ETFs, options, and CFDs. Euronext Paris trading hours are 09:00-17:30 CET. The index typically moves 0.8-1.5% per day, with amplified moves around ECB meetings, French political events, and luxury sector earnings reports. The CAC 40 is highly liquid during European trading hours and responds to both European-specific and global catalysts. Quarterly LVMH earnings reports are arguably the most impactful single-stock events for the index, given the company’s enormous weight. The CAC 40 is popular among traders who want European equity exposure with a distinctive luxury and consumer tilt.
