About EUR/PLN
EUR/PLN is the main quote for the Polish zloty, and the pair that matters most to Polish businesses and households. Poland is a European Union member outside the euro area, with its own central bank and its own rate cycle, and the zloty is among the more actively traded Central European currencies. The euro is the natural reference because the euro area is Poland’s dominant trading partner.
What Moves EUR/PLN?
The National Bank of Poland
Polish rate decisions, and the gap between them and ECB policy, are the most direct driver. The NBP has at times commented on or acted in the currency market.
Euro-area growth
Poland’s export sector is closely integrated with euro-area manufacturing, particularly Germany’s, so the zloty is sensitive to conditions there.
Regional risk premium
Central European currencies carry a risk premium that widens in periods of geopolitical stress, and Poland’s location makes this more pronounced than for western European currencies.
EU fiscal flows
Transfers and their disbursement have periodically been a factor in sentiment towards the zloty.
